Raking and picking up leaves and trash by hand is tedious, time consuming and hard on your back.  Before you had no choice and it could take hours or even days to clean the backyard.  Now with some models you can even mulch leaves and branches at the same time and use it for compose.  There are so many options to choose from depending on your chore, the size of your yard and your budget.

  • Hand held leaf and lawn vacuums are good for going in between potted plants or just around the garage if you only got a small area to clean.  Backpack models have a bigger bag to hold more mulched leaves.  They are really handy helpers for small areas.
  • Self propelled models also called walk behind lawn vacuums are good for properties with a lot of trees.  This type of lawn vacuums can hold more, mulch and with attachments you can add a hose to get into tight places like under shrubs or in your flower beds.  Commercial people use it a lot.
  • Tow-behind lawn vacuums are for the bigger properties and for commercial professionals.  These machines come in all types of configurations to fit most all tractors.  Attached to your lawn tractor is the collector unit with the lawn vacuum engine.

Different models have different engine sizes and collector capacity from 200 gallons up to 415 gallons of debris.  Everything is mulched to save on bags and can be used for compose.  Many lawn vacs have attachments that allow you to hook up a hose to get into the tight areas or to suck up a big pile or leaves.

These machines are powerful and amazing.  With so many features you can get a hose up to 32 feet long to suck or blow the mulched leaves out into your compose heap or even into the back of a truck.  You can reverse your tractor and also dump out the debris.  Power lifters help you unload with a push of a button.

Some units will automatically bag the trash ready for curbside pick up.  There are companies like Cyclone Rake that make units that fold up and can hang on the wall when not in use.  The engines come in different sizes and brands.  The bigger the engine, the bigger the hose can be, the faster the job gets done, but there is a cost that comes with that.  There are even different types of impellers.

Take a look around before you buy.  Look at the warranty.  See if there are any reviews and comments from owners.  Compare units, brands and sizes.  Check out what kind of attachments they have versus standard equipment.  Know your needs and budget.  Lawn vacuums and lawn and leaf vacuums come in all sizes models and prices.
